Weakening economy and lower prices pf competing smartphones are the reason for decreasing sales of the iPhone in Europe, according to the European market research company Kantar. The premiere of the iPhone 4S has led to an increase in market share of Apple’s smartphone in England, Australia and the United States, but users on the continent have proved more concerned about their budgets than the new device. For the 12 weeks ending in late November, the market share of the iPhone in the United States has increased to 36% from 25% a year ago, in England increased from 21% to 31%. In France, however, decreased from 29% to 20% and in Germany from 27% to 22%. Such is the decline in Italy and Spain.

The explanation of analysts is related to the economic situation and measures to tackle the crisis, applying various governments. These include cuts in spending and job losses and the attention that users begin to pay the price is much higher. Meanwhile, Android’s market share of the various European markets varies between 46% and 61%. In Germany the share of the platform is 61% and there best selling smartphone for a period of 12 weeks is Samsung Galaxy S II.

Surely you remember several cases of exploding iPhone in Europe, which we reported some time ago. The European Commission requested additional information from Apple on the case, but now we understand that yesterday was the company warns that if the phone proves to be dangerous to the health of consumers, the Commission would impose a ban on sales in Europe. During the summer there were several signals from different European countries, and currently continues to study the matter. According to Commissioner Meglena Kuneva, if one of the EU, announced that the phone is dangerous, it would require its withdrawal from the entire territory of the Union. This is a serious decision and in the words of Commissioner Kuneva she will not hesitate to do so if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the iPhone is dangerous. Apple rejects the possibility of a defect in the phone and says that the cause of the explosions is an external impact.

When iPhone stepped on the european market six months ago, Apple expected to be the same hit as in USA. But today’s weak sellings in Europe are obvious. Reasons to this are its high price and the strong competition from Nokia and other companies. “European sellings are much lower than expected” claims Nomura Securities’ expert Richard Windsor.

Apple signed exclusive deals in Europe so that only one wireless operator has the rights to distribute iPhone in their country. So far the company has contracts with the british O2, french Orange and german T-Mobile. Strategy Analytics, Р° consulting company from Newton, Massachusetts, figure that these three operators together sold about 350,000 iPhones in the last trimester of last year instead of the expected 500,000. Sellings of the first three months of 2008 are reduced to 300,000.
