The Apple iPhone 4, the newest in the line of Apple smartphones, was officially unveiled to the public on June 7, 2010, by Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs. The iPhone 4 seeks to revise the popular iPhone from the current 3GS model in the largest way since the original iPhone was released.

The new iPhone looks sleek and has Apple’s trademark crisp and clean design. It features a front and back now made from aluminosilicate glass, which is the same material used in helicopter windshields. This removes the curved back that the iPhone 3GS has, so the new model lays completely flat. The iPhone 4 now has a stainless steel band that wraps around the outer body, which also doubles as the antennae. The old iPhone models did not have this stainless steel band, and had internal antennae. The design change now makes the new iPhone 4 thinner than the old model as well. As a matter of fact, at just 9.3 mm thick, the iPhone 4 is now the thinnest smartphone on the planet.

Besides just design changes, one of the major upgrades from the old iPhone 3GS is the new Retina display. It boasts a 960×640 resolution screen at 326 pixels per inch. The human retina can only detect a maximum of 300 pixels per inch, making the pixelation undetectable by the human eye for an incredibly sharp screen. The old iPhone had a 480×320 resolution screen at 163 pixels per inch. When compared side-by-side, the difference is very noticeable. The new iPhone also features an enhanced camera upgraded to 5MP from the 3MP version on the 3GS. Also added to the camera feature is an LED flash and an additional forward facing camera. The forward facing camera allows videophone calling which Apple has labeled as FaceTime. The new iPhone is also now capable of filming true 720P HD video clips at 30 frames per second. The 3GS video recording capabilities were limited to VGA quality. Apple added dual microphones to the iPhone 4 as well. This allows for optimized noise reduction. The old iPhone was built with only one microphone. One last hardware upgrade was the extension of battery life in the new model, which allows an additional two hours of talk time, an additional hour of internet usage, or and additional 10 hours of audio playback from the old model.

Along with a host of new software upgrades as well, Apple certainly sought to revamp the iPhone 4. With the extensive enhancements, it certainly appears at face value that Apple succeeded. The iPhone 4 is scheduled for release to the public on June 24, 2010 and will cost $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model with service plan from AT&T. The iPhone 3GS is still available for sale with a $99 price tag for an 8GB model.

Preliminary orders for new iPhone 4 yesterday jammed the website of the exclusive provider AT&T. Even Apple was forced to exclude the hotline because the excessive number of rings, transmits Reuters.
